Abstract
|
Full Text
The purpose of this research was to find out the variables which differentiate the levels of interest of 60-72 months old children in foreign languages. Relational study with a descriptive model was used to achieve this purpose. The sample of the study was collected from public and private pre-schools operating under Turkish Ministry of Education, which are located in the central district on the Anatolian side of İstanbul, and which provide training in foreign languages. 60-72 months old 221 children participated in the research. A five option likert type scale called “The Scale for 60-72 Months Aged Children’s Interest in Foreign Languages” developed by Balaban-Dağal and Şahenk-Erkan (2016) was used to measure the interest in foreign languages of the children. To analyze the data, besides using variance analysis and independent sample t test as the means of quantitative analysis, Pearson Correlation Analysis was also used. The results of the research suggest that “gender” and “the type of school” do not make any difference on the pre-school children’s interest in foreign languages. Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was determined among children’s interest in foreign lan-guages, parents’ foreign language level, children’s age group, out of school training of foreign language and foreign language lesson hours in a week.
Keywords: 60-72 months old children; Foreign language; Interest; Pre-school children.

Full Text
This study constitutes the success story of Dilek Livaneli (DL) who became known through making respectable improvements in the Kumköyü Primary School which is located in Samsun province, Çarşamba district and the village itself. Although being a village teacher has a declining image which represents it lost its importance due to the country’s socio-political and economic progress, there is not a program or working description for teachers working in villages to show them what to do and how to do. This work aim to analyze the experience of DL through revealing the things she did and the way she did, to guide other teachers and from this point of view, this work aims to make people ask the question of “Is it possible to prepare a working plan in order to render teachers capable so that they can accomplish necessary tasks related with people and students in villages on their own? This study is in the scope of qualitative study and its design is case study. The most important result is that village teacher, physical maintenance of school, student’s academic, cultural, social achievements and physical developments mostly depend on the initiative taken by villagers’ own economic, cultural and social attempts. As in the case of DL, success in such issues is related with inner motivation and work order of people's themselves.

Abstract
|
Full Text
Self-compassion is one of the noticeable component for increasing levels of psychological well-being and life satisfaction. In addition, many studies have showed significant relationship between self-compassion and depression. Therefore, aim of this study was to examine the comparison of meaning in life and rumination levels of the university students who had different self- compassion levels (low, medium, high). Sample of this study consisted 301 university students. “Self Compassion Scale” which was adapted into Turkish by Deniz, Kesici and Sümer (2008) was used in order to measure the self-compassion levels of the students. Meaning in life levels of the students was measured with “Meaning in Life Scale” which was adapted into Turkish by Demirbaş (2010). Lastly, “Rumination Scale” was used to assess participant’s rumination level which was adapted into Turkish by Neziroğlu (2010). Detecting the differences between rumination and meaning in life scores according the three different levels of self-compassion, one-way ANOVA, Thamhane’s T2 and Scheffe test were used. Results of the study showed that there were significant differences in the average scores of the meaning in life levels of the students according to their different self-compassion levels (p<.001). In addition, there were significant differences in the average scores of the rumination levels of the students with respect to their different self-compassion levels (p<.001). Findings of this study showed the significant changing of rumination levels and meaning in life according to self-compassion. Findings can be used for further studies and experimental research.

Development of Number Sense Test for the 4th Grade
Abstract
|
Full Text
In this research, it is aimed to investigate a valid and reliable Number Sense Test (NST) that is developed according to the elementary school 4th grade curriculum. In thedevelopment process; sixcomponents determined by Reys and friends (1999) with "Quantitative Reasoning and Inferences" component set by Greeno (1991) was used. Fourth grade students from randomly selected seven public schools in Kadıköy district of İstanbul participated in this study. Application were conducted with a total of 598 students (282 boy, 316 girl). A draft test consisting of 18 items was applied the students. The scores obtained from the test were analyzed quantitatively. After the exploratory factor analysis, Number Sense Test consisting of 11 items and 3 components with their eigenvalues over 1 was obtained. In order to test whether there is a significant relationship between the components of the NST, Pearson Moment Correlation Analysis was performed. After the analysis a significant positive correlation with a confidence level of p<.01 were found between all the components of the Number Sense Test. The reliability study of the test was conducted using Cronbach's Alpha Internal Consistency method. The total value of Cronbach's Alpha Internal Consistency of the test is .72 level. It is thought that the developed test will be effective in the number sense studies that can be done for the primary school students.
